Below is a guide for which roles we recommend classifying in each job category for the Great Colleges program:
Administrators have assignments which require management of the institution, or a customarily recognized department or subdivision thereof. Assignments require the performance of work directly related to management policies or general business operations of the institution, department or subdivision. Assignments in this category customarily and regularly require the incumbent to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
Faculty have assignments for the purpose of conducting instruction, research or public service as a principal activity (or activities).
Exempt Professional Staff perform academic support, student service and institutional support. Exempt Professional Staff are not subject to FLSA overtime provisions and are paid an annual salary for all hours worked. Exempt employees include, but are not limited to, the following: professionals; those who exercise independent judgment and discretion in their roles; and/or those who manage other people.
Non-exempt Staff can be hourly or salaried. They are typically administrative, operational or production employees.
Adjunct Faculty (whether full-time or part-time) are only included for participating Associate/Community Colleges.

As part of the free program, ModernThink will survey a random sample of your institution’s faculty and staff across four categories (Administration, Faculty, Exempt Professional Staff and Non-exempt Staff) to participate in our survey. Sample sizes are determined based on the number of employees in the various categories at your institution (See Methodology for more information).
Many colleges take advantage of this assessment by using it as a springboard for a more comprehensive institution-wide survey. Participants in the program may customize certain components of the faculty/staff survey* or simply broaden the survey audience to include additional faculty or staff not captured as part of the free program. Benefits of surveying more of your campus community include:
After you register for the program, ModernThink will provide your exact sample audience breakdown. At that point you can decide if you would like to oversample or customize. Costs for oversampling will vary depending on the number of additional employees surveyed.
Costs will vary based on the level of customization and the number of additional faculty and staff surveyed.

Take advantage of the Great Colleges program by using the process as a springboard for a more comprehensive institution-wide survey. Applicants can customize certain components of the faculty/staff survey, such as adding/customizing demographics and adding/customizing statements and/or questions. They may also broaden the survey audience to include other staff not captured as part of the Great Colleges program. Results can still be used for the recognition component within the Great Colleges program as long as the survey is conducted between February – Late March and the survey optimizations do not differ too greatly from the standard survey.
Knowing your survey goals and what you wish to accomplish with your survey data is critical to crafting the custom survey that meets your needs.
When you choose a custom survey, you have the option to survey additional staff beyond the random sample that is included in the Great Colleges program. Knowing your target audience for your custom survey allows you to customize your job roles, departments, colleges, etc. so that the survey statements and demographics speak to your audience.
Once you have determined your goals and audience, ModernThink will partner closely with you to determine which of the many available customizations options best fit your institution’s needs. Customization options include, but are not limited to: custom statements, custom demographics, custom open-ended questions, custom survey definitions, custom benefit satisfaction statements, custom reporting options, custom survey data reports, workplace expert consulting and more.
ModernThink will provide you with a custom survey agreement that meets your institution’s goals and budgetary needs. All institutions that choose to administer a custom survey are still eligible for recognition through the Great Colleges program.
A knowledgeable and dedicated Project Manager will work with you through every step of the process, from creating your custom communication strategy to the delivery of your custom survey results reports.
Pricing for custom surveys depends on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the number of faculty and staff surveyed, the method of survey delivery (i.e. paper or online), the customization level of statements, the customization level of demographics, the level of reporting, etc.
